8:00 am - 8:50 am Breakfast Keynote featuring:
Pillar #5 "Economics and Globalization"
Debbie Simpson, Head of Functions, Senior Partner, & Managing Director, Boston Consulting Group moderated by Omar Qari, Co-Founder & CEO, Abacus.
"Getting Global Teams Right the First Time" - Succeeding in today’s global economy demands most companies to deploy a global footprint. Deploying global teams brings many benefits such as on the ground knowledge of local markets, gaining expertise where it resides, and bringing together diversity of experience and perspective. Creating well-functioning local teams can be hard enough. Succeeding at deploying global teams is very hard and, in some instances, can take several attempts due to communication challenges, and functional and social differences.
So how does one get this right the first time? Omar Qari, CEO Abacus will facilitate a discussion with Debbie Simpson, CFO, Boston Consulting Group who will share her experiences and insights gained from successfully building a global workforce while experiencing robust growth.
8:50 am - 9:40 am Plenary C
Pillar #2 "Technology, Disruption and Change"
Ash Noah, Vice President CGMA External Relations with special guest speaker, Michael Bayer, CFO, Wasabi Technologies, Inc.
"Leveraging Technology to Power the High Growth Enterprise" - Modern, data centered technologies, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and analytics, along with new architectures and subscription models built in the cloud are giving CFOs new fire power and flexibility. CFOs are leveraging these technologies to drive organizational transformation and create compelling customer experiences. Yet, research shows only a small number of finance teams have the capabilities required to leverage these technologies.
Join Ash Noah, CPA, CGMA and managing director at Association of International Certified Professional Accountants (AICPA & CIMA) and Michael Bayer, CFA, CFO at Wasabi Technologies and Lecturer at Babson College as they share their insights and explore how you can unleash the full potential of your finance teams in exploiting these new technologies.
9:40 am - 9:50 am Break
9:50 am - 10:40 am Plenary D
Pillar #2 "Technology, Disruption and Change"
Blake Oliver, Director Product Marketing, Floqast with special guest panelists, Jim Waddell, Corporate Controller, Bose Corporation, Michael Matthews, Director of Accounting, Environmental Systems Design, Inc., and Phil Murray, CFO of Camp Gladiator
"A CFOs Imperative - Put Your Controller In Control!" - Its well-known today’s CFO must be strategic to succeed. But, what their financial controller? Much like the CFO of ten years ago, today’s controller must buck the stereotype of an introverted number-cruncher. For CFOs to be strategic their controller needs to evolve into a business-savvy and tech-savvy leader. One that can provide insightful information, both financial and non-financial, about business operations. When this is realized the quality of decision making to reduce risks and improve outcomes is greatly heightened. Unfortunately, many controllers aren’t equipped successfully to perform in this expanding IT & leadership role.
The good news is some CFOs have solved this dilemma. Join Blake Oliver, recognized as one of the “40 Under 40” in the accounting profession, for a presentation, panel discussion, and interactive Q&A session on insights developed by Floqast to put the Controller in Control.
Learning Objectives:
10:40 am - 11:30 am Plenary E
Pillar #2 "Technology, Disruption and Change"
Tom Zauli, SVP & General Manager, Softrax with special guest speaker, Michael Smith, Chief Accounting Officer, Tyler Technologies.
"Surviving Today’s Technology Complexity, One CAO’s True Story" – Requirements in the back office have grown exponentially while reporting deadlines remain fixed. New accounting standards, ASC606 and ASC 842, and new business models, such as the subscription economy and IoT, are driving this change. Technology is the answer, but the game has changed significantly. The “Cloud” was to provide new benefits but brings new challenges. Instead of delivering insight to leadership, finance teams are forced to direct time to overcome these technology challenges. Old models for automating no longer apply, and finance leaders must embrace new approaches to avoid significant risks to the business.
Tom Zauli, SVP & General Manager, Softrax will facilitate an insightful discussion with special guest speaker, Michael Smith, Chief Accounting Officer, Tyler Technologies. Michael will share his journey to develop a strategy and plan to overcome his existing reporting challenges while operationalizing ASC 606. He will share the steps he took, the people and skills involved, and his interactions with his CFO and executive team. Practical learned lessons will be shared.
11:30 am - 12:00 pm Break

12:00 pm - 12:50 pm Keynote Luncheon featuring:
Pillar #6 "Leadership"
Hal Gregersen, Executive Director, MIT Leadership Center
"Questions Are the Answer: Leveraging the Power of Inquiry in an Age of Digital Transformation"
When confronted with a problem, our typical response is to look for a pre-packaged solution. But in a world increasingly transformed by technology and riddled with uncertainty, we face problems that have no ready-made answer or past precedent. CEOs and other business leaders may think their role is to have all the answers, but in fact, says Hal Gregersen, they should be asking questions. In this presentation based on his book, “Questions Are the Answer: A Breakthrough Approach to Your Most Vexing Problems at Work and in Life” Gregersen outlines his “Question Burst” method, which is designed to transform companies into hotbeds of innovation by teaching leaders and employees to rediscover their powers of inquiry. Drawing upon his first-hand research on innovative companies and leaders at Amazon, Pixar, Tesla and more, Gregersen demonstrates how asking questions inevitably leads not only to solutions but to new and exciting transformative ideas.
12:50 pm - 1:00 pm Break
1:00 pm - 1:50 pm Plenary F
Pillar # 7 "Strategy and Innovation"
Sandra Clarke, CFO, Blue Shield of California and John Woods, Vice Chairman & CFO, Citizens Financial Group, Inc. - moderated by Peter Hirst, Senior Associate Dean for Executive Education, MIT Sloan School of Management
"The Strategic Dilemma CFOs Face"- “Be Strategic” is the mantra CFOs’ hear. Being strategic requires making hard choices and placing bets on how to win. In today’s disruptive world, winning strategies require innovation which is inherently risky. In contrast, CFOs can be seen as risk averse or “NO CFOS”. Today’s reality is CFOs have a challenging essential role to play in the strategy process. One where CFOs embrace innovation. Successful CFOs recognize to “Be Strategic” they must be involved throughout their company’s innovation process. This role includes guiding the executive team in balancing the potential benefits of innovation with the inherent risks faced, allocating capital, and overseeing the cost-effective delivery of innovation and how innovation risk is being managed.
During this session Peter Hirst, MIT Professor, will facilitate an engaging discussion with John Woods, CFO Citizen’s Financial Group and Sandy Clarke, CFO Blue Shield California. John and Sandy have and continue to play critical leadership roles in their organizations’ strategy and innovation processes. During this discussion John and Sandy will share their lessons learned and insights which conference attendees can apply to shape into a personal roadmap for playing a leadership role in their company’s strategy and innovation processes.

"Are You Lagging or Leading in Your Performance Management Role?" - In today’s rapidly changing business environment, CFOs and business leaders are called upon by the organization to better manage company performance, react more quickly to changing conditions, and make better strategic decisions to optimize company performance. The tools of the past – disconnected spreadsheets and email – simply can’t keep up. They result in errors, missed deadlines, and lack of confidence in the final numbers. Fortunately, EPM software and a little process reengineering are putting CFOs back in driver’s seat.
John Head, VP Host Analytics, will share a strategic perspective on how some CFOs are significantly improving their EPM processes to drive improved performance. John will also engage other CFOs and thought-leaders who will share how they have successfully implemented enterprise performance management programs and processes.
